who am I?
I come from a small family in the
quiet, rural part of Scotland, UK. I attended High School in
the Scottish town of Lockerbie, Dumfriesshire. I studied for
several years at Napier University in Edinburgh then decided to
move to the states in 2002. Factors that brought me here are
for example the climate and the outgoing, friendly
people.
For a long time California has been
identified as a place where the people are more health conscious and
fitness oriented. This is what made it an easy decision to work here
as a trainer. The great all year round weather also makes it a
great place to live for the fitness enthusiast.
I have always had a strong interest
in sports and keeping physically fit from a young age. During my mid
teens I started to compete in regional competitions in sports
such as athletics, cross country and rugby. I was quite a thin kid
at school so I started weight training to improve my athletic
performance and build my self confidence. I was so motivated by the
results that I quickly integrated it into my life
The interest in personal
training stemmed from the time I lived in Edinburgh. In the
facility where I worked out people often asked me for training and
nutritional advice. I found it an easy progression from helping
people with their programs into making a career in the industry.
Since moving to California I
have completed personal training certifications from several well
known bodies. I also keep updated about what is going on in the
industry. This ranges from reading a variety of exercise
publications, going to fitness industry seminars and taking
continuing education credits to update my knowledge. The extra
certifications have specialized in fields such as core conditioning,
flexibility, program design and postural analysis.
I compete in fitness competitions
which has given me valuable personal experience in the
correct way to diet and exercise. The pictures are from the
Musclemania shows held in California. I find personal training a very rewarding and fulfilling
experience. You can really change and affect peoples lives for the
better. I have worked with people from all walks of life, ages and
backgrounds.
One of the most important pieces of advice I give, whatever their goal, is
stick to it. You cannot expect to see changes over night.
Consistency is the key that will get you there.

The modern fitness industry is still
relatively in its infancy. It is constantly changing and evolving so
I believe that it is essential to keep up to date with the latest
information. What is deemed good advice one day can be contradicted
and shot down the next. This is why I try to undergo talks, seminars
and short courses when I can.
